Espresso Machine Types

Espresso Machine Types

There are many types of espresso machines used in home and commercial settings. Choosing an espresso machine that’s perfect for your lifestyle and needs doesn’t have to be hard. There are five categories of espresso machines: steam-powered, manual, semi-automatic, fully automatic, and super-automatic. Continue reading to learn about the differences between these five types of espresso machines!

Steam Powered Espresso Machines

Steam-powered espresso machines extract espresso by using steam pressure. 1.5 bars of steam pressure forces the boiling water through the coffee grinds. The extraction time is incredibly quick and takes approximately one minute. Coffee brewed by this type of method can taste more bitter and sour.

Manual/Lever Espresso Machines

Manual espresso machines utilize a manually operated lever without using steam and boiling water. This makes your coffee more flavourful. There are two types of manual espresso machines, the spring type, and the non-spring type. The non-spring type requires the barista to lift the lever to allow water into the brew head before using consistent and firm pressure to force the lever downwards. Since the right amount of pressure is difficult to gauge, it’s more commonly used by espresso enthusiasts who want more control.

For the spring type, the lever starts in the up position. The barista then presses it downwards against a spring in the piston so water flows into the group head. The spring aids in providing the right amount of pressure. These are some of the most common espresso machines used in the commercial environment.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines

The semi-automatic espresso machine is more popular than manual espresso machines since it’s easier to use. An electric switch engages and disengages the pump to provide consistent pressure, while the operator controls the amount of water. This results in a greater variety of espresso beverages such as espresso ristretto and cafe crema.

Fully Automatic Espresso Machines

This type of machine is similar to the semi-automatic machine except that it pre-sets the amount of water used. This can increase the consistency of the espresso produced, making it popular due to its ease of usage.

Super-Automatic Espresso Machines

Super-automatic espresso machines do not require a barista or operator. These machines grind coffee beans with a built-in grinder and will measure the right amount of grinds, tamp them, measure the water, and conduct the entire process of espresso making on its own. They usually have many programmable settings and allow you to tailor the taste of the coffee. Higher-end models can also self-clean. You’ll only need to occasionally refill ingredients and remove spent grounds. Their multiple features also lead to the heaviest price tag out of all the espresso machine types. With its “push-a-button” technology, it is the easiest type of machine to use, but it removes control from its user.
